WHAS Crusade for Children president and chief executive officer Rebecca Jackson announced at a press conference on August 22 that the College of Education and Human Development, the Center for Women and Infants, the School of Dentistry and the Department of Pediatrics will receive funding from the Crusade for their work with special needs children.
Representatives from each college and department were presented checks at the press conference and President Ramsey stated that the Crusade has granted the university more than $18 million since 1954.
The gift to the CEHD is $24,000 and will be used as a scholarship fund to support pre-service and in-service educators who are seeking additional training to work with special needs children in their schools. Dr. Peter Alter, assistant professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at the CEHD, applied for the grant and is the principal investigator for the project.
“This is a great opportunity for us to offer training and education that can make an incredible difference in the quality of education and the experience special needs children receive in our schools,” stated Alter.
Additional information including the application packet is available at http://louisville.edu/education/departments/t-l/student-awards.html. Scholarship applications are due on November 1, 2008 and will support recipients for the Spring 2009 semester.
