Awards and Accomplishments: Department of Teaching and Learning

- Dr. Tom Tretter - 2007 Metroversity Instructional Development Award; Elected to the review board for “Journal of Research in Science Teaching”; elected to inaugural review board for “Journal of Nanotechnology Education (new journal which began publication in 2007).
- Drs. Ann Larson and Jenny Bay-Williams - revitalized and re-established the Kappa Delta Pi honorary on the UofL campus.
- Drs. Bill Bush, Bob Ronau, Tom Tretter, E. Todd Brown, Maggie McGatha, Chuck Thompson and Sherri Brown - extraordinary work on the diagnostic mathematics assessment for middle and elementary school teachers. Over 10,000 tests were given to teachers to assess content knowledge and teaching practice. The assessment is listed on the U.S. Department of Education’s web page as only one of four appropriate assessments for the Math-Science Partnership projects.
- Dr. Jenny Bay-Williams was elected as president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators
- Dr. Bill Bush was awarded the first national award, “Distinguished Service Award of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators”; he also received the 2007 Excellence in Service in Mathematics Teacher Education Award from the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators.
- Donna Oakes, Peggy Brooks and Dawn Coulter - through the Office of Field Placement, they placed more than 1,200 students in field work, placed 200 student teachers, and created and trained 586 teacher internship teams.
- Dr. Maggie McGatha - elected president of the Kentucky Council of Teacher Mathematics for 2007-2009.
- Brenda Overturf - elected president of the Kentucky Reading Association
- Dr. Ann Larson - 2007 UofL Provost’s Award for Exemplary Advising
- Dr. Teddie Phillipson-Mower - her work in environmental education has made it a priority within the university and the surrounding community.
- Starr Lewis - selected by the Kentucky Association of Education Supervisors as the 2007 “Outstanding Educator” in recognition of her 33 outstanding years serving Kentucky’s children.
- Jean Hicks Wolph - recognized nationally as having one of the most outstanding Writing Project programs.
- Drs. Tori Molfese, E. Todd Brown and Eunjoo Jung - for their work on the Scale Up Project, a $2 million subcontract with the University of California, Berkeley, which investigates early childhood mathematics instruction.
- Dr. Margaret Pentecost, Paula Campbell, and Dr. Tori Molfese - who made the Early Childhood Center and Scholar House become a reality. The program will serve as a model for others around the country and will provide temporary housing and childcare for homeless mothers who want to obtain a college degree.
- Dr. Diane Kyle - voted as University of Louisville’s Faculty Favorite for 2007.
