CEHD Faculty Receive $1.1 Million Grant for SBD Research

Drs. Terrance M. Scott, Peter Alter (Department of Teaching and Learning), and Patrick Possel (Department of Educational & Counseling Psychology) have received a 5-year award of $1.1 million to develop an intervention process for high school students with serious behavior disorders.

The study will focus on specific components of intervention such as enhancing school and teacher capacity, building youth competence and increasing family and community supports. Evaluation of a new intervention program will be conducted with over 480 students in 40 diverse high schools across six states and spanning three IES regional lab locations. The UofL component will consist of 16 high schools.

At the completion of the grant the researchers will have a fully developed intervention with demonstrated results that can be implemented in the schools, and a comprehensive intervention manual will be ready for use among all schools as well. They expect their supplemental research to generate information that will be vital to improving programming for high school students with SBD.

This project will be a unique, cross-university collaboration among groups of researchers in the fields of Special Education and Mental Health. Some of the other universities and centers involved in the study include: Lehigh University, James Madison University, Attention and Learning Disabilities Center and University of Maryland.
