CEHD Expands Programming to Panama

University of Louisville’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) announced plans to begin offering an executive-format master’s degree in Human Resources and Organization Development in the Republic of Panama in August 2012.
Blake Haselton and Oscar Leon
CEHD’s Dean Blake Haselton recently signed the agreement with President Oscar Leon of Quality Leadership University in Panama City, Panama, which is partnering with UofL to offer the program. Approval from the Panamanian government is still pending. UofL faculty will travel to Panama to teach in intensive residencies, and use online live web conferencing and other online instructional technology to offer coursework for the program. Haselton indicated that this program was a key part of his strategic initiative to engage CEHD faculty and students in international contexts.

Leon said that this would be the first master’s program in human resources in Panama. Although a small country, Panama has one of the fastest growing economies in the world, serving as a logistics hub and a Latin American hub for international companies such as HP, Dell, Proctor and Gamble, LG, Caterpillar, and SAP Miller.

Rod Githens, director of the master’s program said, “This Panama initiative is one part of our strategy to become one of the top programs in our field. Panama is an ideal location in Latin America for us to launch our international engagement.” In addition to teaching, faculty members have begun efforts to conduct research, consult with companies, and conduct workshops in Panama. The program will also offer scholarships for Louisville students to study and complete internships in Panama.

The M.S. in Human Resources and Organization Development offers concentrations in Human Resource Leadership, Workplace Learning and Performance, and Health Professions Education. Affiliated programs also exist at the bachelor’s and doctoral levels.
